EAEA General Assembly 2002

On November 14-15 2003 in Larnaka, Cyprus, the General Assembly of the European Association for the Education of Adults – EAEA - took place, and its 50th Anniversary was celebrated.

The EAEA was founded in 1953; in the 50 years of its existence the EAEA (the former Bureau for the Education of Adults) has changed. It has developed its range of action and widened its membership; it has approached new themes and new partners. It cooperates on European and international levels with institutions and organisations that pursuit similar goals, and it is the largest European association for the promotion of Adult Education in Europe.

The EAEA today is a European NGO with almost 100 national, regional, and local member organisations in 34 countries. With its members and their member organisations, the EAEA represents some 5000 organizations and between 40 – 60 million learners.

To commemorate the significant date of 50 years of working for adult learning and joining efforts in promoting adult education in Europe, the 50th anniversary was celebrated with the General Assembly in Cyprus. Almost all member organizations of EAEA and several local and regional organizations were participating.

In order to celebrate the 50th Anniversary in the most appropriate way, the EAEA launched the first European GRUNDTVIG Award in Adult Education.

In an Exhibition about EAEA History we wished to give an overview over 50 years of work in adult learning with photos, videos, books, articles... of our common past. The Exhibition was available during the whole conference, it will soon be posted on the EAEA website.

As we always link our General Assembly to a specific theme, there was a Conference on Active Citizenship. After an introduction to the theme and a keynote speech, we explored this important issue and one of the priorities of the EAEA in several workshops.
