Citizenship
education at school in Europe - new publication of the European Commission
The
strengthening of social cohesion and more active participation by citizens in
social and political life have become central concerns of national governments
and the European Union. This study considers the contribution made by education
in 30 European countries to developing responsible citizens. How is the concept
of ‘responsible citizenship´ defined in national education policies? What aims
are pursued and what content and approaches used for citizenship education in
curricula for primary and general secondary education? How are pupils prepared
for their role as responsible European and world citizens? How do schools
encourage participation by pupils in the life of the school and local
community? How does the evaluation of schools take such action into account?
How are pupils assessed? How are teachers trained to educate pupils for
citizenship?
