A holistic approach to education supports personal development

The final report of the Interest group on Lifelong Learning’s third meeting that discussed "Personal development and well-being in learning" has been published. Organised at the European Parliament on 16 February, the debate aimed to gain an understanding on how the topic is perceived at the European level, which initiatives exist on the ground and how to channel best practices up to the decision-making level.

The Interest Group meeting gathered educators, learners, stakeholders and policy-makers. Jean Gordon, Researcher in Educational Policy, opened the debate with a presentation on the topic on behalf of UEF-Learning4WellBeing.

The thorough introduction unfolded into a dynamic exchange. The participants discussed the importance of peer and mutual learning, collaboration between the multi-faceted actors in education. All agreed that only a holistic approach to education can support personal development, key to the success of any educational endeavour. Yet in spite of us knowing what the keys to success are, barriers are incessantly raised by all sides: educators, institutions, parents and sometimes even learners themselves.

The meeting was organised by EAEA and the Lifelong Learning Platform and chaired by MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen (EPP, FI).
