EAEA GRUNDTVIG AWARD 2016. Lithuania is a country of possibilities – it was under this theme that Karalius Mindaugas Vocational Training Centre organized learning services for refugees. The trainings were designed to help refugees become more autonomous by gaining qualifications in a specific field and to contribute to social welfare.
The article series shares good practices by introducing the nominees of the EAEA Grundtvig Award 2016.
While being granted asylum is the moment that all refugees wait for, it does not automatically make them feel as an integral part of the society. To fight against social exclusion and to help refugees find gainful employment, the Kaunas Refugee Reception Centre launched an initiative entitled Lithuania – a country of possibilities for refugees.
Sponsored by the European Refugee Fund and implemented by Karalius Mindaugas Vocational Training Centre, the programme targeted refugee women between 30 and 45 who had already been granted asylum. Through a modular training, the participants gained competences and skills about the cosmetic industry, which ultimately earned them qualification degrees.
The Karalius Mindaugas Vocational Training Centre points out that the modularity played a decisive factor in the success of the programme. By making sure the participants receive a proper introduction to the course and also have a chance for self-reflection before its completion, the centre fostered a holistic view of learning. Raising the refugees’ awareness about their own skills and the individuality of the learning process also contributes to their general well-being and confidence.
