Citizenship language pack for migrants in Europe: accessible and interactive learning

EAEA GRUNDTVIG AWARD 2016. Learning to communicate in European languages has never been this easy and accessible. The L-Pack 2 consortium invites learners to watch as many as thirty short videos about everyday life, available in seven language versions. More interactive tools are offered within the project to give migrants space for practice, discussion and self-reflection.

The article series shares good practices by introducing the nominees of the EAEA Grundtvig Award 2016.

All migrants, regardless of the country of destination, face the same situations: they have to find a flat and a school for their children, do the groceries and at some point see a doctor. These situations usually require them to speak the local language, be it English, German or Greek. L-Pack 2, funded within the Lifelong Learning Programme and coordinated by Empolese Valdelsa Development Agency in Italy, builds on a previous project and offers a “Citizenship language pack for migrants in Europe” to make such tasks easier.

With thirty YouTube videos touching upon everyday problems, the project gives a practical tool for migrants who still have trouble communicating when going shopping or talking to their neighbours. The videos are easy to watch thanks to the inclusion of subtitles; additional written materials and voice registration plug-in significantly enhance the learning process. Should the learners need help or advice, they can post a message on the forum, also available on the project website.

While the extension of the first project by the European Commission is already a quality mark, the growing popularity among the learners is perhaps the best proof of its usefulness and accessibility. The consortium reports that between January 2014 and April 2016 the new L-Pack videos were visualized on YouTube 680,000 times in 194 countries of the world.
