CONFINTEA VI follow-up strategy and Newsletter launched

The Sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VI), held from 1 to 4 December 2009 in Belém, Brazil, closed with the adoption of the Belém Framework for Action which records the commitments of Member States and presents a strategic guide for the global development of adult literacy and adult education within the perspective of lifelong learning.

Moreover, CONFINTEA VI saw the launch of the first Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE). Compared to previous CONFINTEA conferences, the participants of CONFINTEA VI put much emphasis on the shift from rhetoric to action reflected in the Belém Framework for Action, in which Member States committed themselves to follow-up on its recommendations and gave UNESCO the mandate to monitor and implement the Framework.

To comply with its mandate, The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) has – in consultation with the CONFINTEA VI Advisory Committee as well as other key partners – developed a CONFINTEA VI follow-up strategy, see below.

Advocacy is one of the pillars of this follow-up strategy. We must ensure greater visibility of the key issues and commitments laid down in the Belém Framework for Action if the shift from rhetoric to action is to be realised. To that end, we will continue to monitor the developments in the UNESCO Member States after CONFINTEA VI. We believe it is important to document these developments and share them with you in the CONFINTEA follow-up news, which we will disseminate by e-mail and on the CONFINTEA website twice a year.

We are aware that the activities described in the bulletin are not complete as we rely on the information we are being provided with. I would like to invite you to support the implementation of the Belém Framework for Action by keeping us informed on all activities going on in your country related to the follow-up to CONFINTEA VI, such as the creation of national follow-up committees, the translation of documents into national languages, the development and implementation of policies related to the Belém Framework for Action as well as any other relevant information regarding adult education and lifelong learning practices and policies in your country.

The CONFINTEA website will continue to be updated with the news we receive from you. All official CONFINTEA VI documents and reports can be downloaded from the website.
