EAEA GRUNDTVIG AWARD 2015. The aim of the German-Danish Sustainable food and move competences project was to link the topics of illiteracy and basic education with health-promoting issues – food and movement – and to enable participants to an implicit learning.

According studies there are 7.5 million people in Germany who have limited reading and writing skills. Also health problems are still dependent on class and education level.
Sustainable food and move competences project, a nominee for the EAEA Grundtvig Award 2015 in the European category, focused upon the development and testing of new learning and teaching materials for functional illiterates in the field of food and move literacy.
The project’s idea was innovative: to connect the learning process of the adult illiterates with the topic of food and movement. The project underlined the development of food and move competencies and strengthened self-determination of functional illiterates and migrants.
In the framework of this project, the food-literacy-approach was complemented with the move-literacy-approach for the first time. Furthermore, the new German and Danish partnerships on university and folk high school levels produced inspiration and synergy effects across borders, and in addition contributed to the adoption of project results, sustainability and interculturality.
During five several-day workshops eight folk high schools, the state association of folk high schools Schleswig-Holstein, students and lecturers developed new, practice-relevant and application-oriented methods as well as teaching- and learning materials for adult education.
Sustainable food and move competences project
Every year, EAEA hands out the EAEA Grundtvig Award to successful projects in adult education. In 2015, three projects were awarded with a prize: an international, a European and a national initiative. The theme of this year’s award was Adult Education and Health.
