Helka Repo, 32, starts as the EAEA Communications Officer as Aura Vuorenrinne will go on a parental leave. The new staff member expects to get challenged and to learn about European adult education during her time at the EAEA.
“As the EAEA Communications Officer, I get to combine two elements of my work experience: non-formal adult education and advocacy work on the European level,” Helka tells.
She has previously worked as a Communications Assistant at the Finnish Workers’ Educational Association (TSL) and Kehys - The Finnish NGDO Platform to the EU. Additionally she has worked in the Finnish embassy in Peru. Helka’s academic background is in sociology.
Helka expects the work at EAEA’s Communication Unit to be versatile.
“My work will include basic communicational tasks, which I absolutely love. My duties include taking care of EAEA’s information services; sending newsletters, updating the EAEA website and so on.”
Helka expects to enhance her knowledge about adult education in the European level. A new challenge will be graphic design of EAEA communication materials and some new programmes related to this responsibility.
She thinks that among EAEA staff members, cooperation and combining different types of knowledge and experience is important.
“My first impression is that cooperation with EAEA’s Brussels Office will be fruitful!”
Helka does a lot of volunteering in her spare time. One could describe her as a prototype of an active citizen.
“I coordinate Amnesty International’s Finnish sections's network against violence on women. Additionally I am active in a development organisation that works with communities in the Andes.”
In addition to volunteering, Helka is an adult learner. She is studying journalism in the evenings at the local University of Applied Sciences. But also she has to relax sometimes.
“Rest of the time I spend seeing my friends, watching movies, reading books and going to gigs!”
