Using the media to learn the language easier with the LiMe project

EAEA GRUNDTVIG AWARD 2016. When moving to a new country, migrants are immediately exposed to the local language, which can be as overwhelming as it is instructive. To the integration of migrants, the Language in Media (LiMe) project consortium identified strategies that could help decode language in context.

The article series shares good practices by introducing the nominees of the EAEA Grundtvig Award 2016.

Without a doubt, authentic language material is necessary to learn effectively. While migrants might think they are in a perfect position to pick up the language, being surrounded by it everywhere, sometimes the task requires specific skills.

The Language in Media (LiMe) project, coordinated by the Volkshochschule im Landkreis Cham and supported by the EU Lifelong Learning Programme, identified strategies to help migrant learners understand the language in context, drawing materials from contemporary media.

The project consortium, which included partners from Italy, Spain, Poland and the UK, analysed existing language provision for migrants and patterns of using media in language teaching. Thanks to the creation of a virtual learning platform, both learners and teachers can now access exercises and tools from the media, which include examples taken from film trailers, soap operas and social networks, to mention but a few. The resources are available on three different CEFR levels, namely A2, B1 and B2, making them easy to use also in a classroom. The teachers can additionally use a training package on effective use of media in teaching.

Believing that the media can be an accurate reflection of society, the project consortium provided learners with concrete tools to develop both language skills and cultural awareness. In this respect, LiMe promotes intercultural dialogue and contributes to successful integration of migrants.
