Better jobs for women still scarce
Women are continuing to drive employment growth in Europe, but remain disadvantaged on the labour market in relation to men, says a report adopted by the European Commission today. Despite higher educational attainment, women continue to be employed less and paid less than men. The 2008 report on Equality between women and men will be transmitted to EU leaders at the Spring Summit on 8-9 March.

Arts festivals supports Year of Intercultural Dialogue
Representatives of major European arts and culture festivals signed a declaration of support to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue last week in Ljubljana together with the EU Commissioner Ján Figel'. It means that the aims and messages of the year will be reflected throughout 2008 in dozens of festivals all over the EU and beyond.
Communication on Financial Education
On 18 December, the Commission adopted a Communication on Financial Education. This Communication underlines the Commission's support for the provision of financial education delivered as close as possible to the citizens that need it, namely through Member State, national and regional authorities, non-governmental agencies and the financial services sector.

Turkish AE focus on basic skills
Adult education in Turkey focuses chiefly on literacy courses. According to a national census held in 2000, Turkey´s adult population (15 years and above as confirmed by UNESCO) numbers in excess of 47.5 million, and13.5 % of these individuals are illiterate. 80 per cent of adult females are illiterate. One in 5 females of school-age is also illiterate. Literacy course are thus focused mainly on women, especially those living in the Eastern and South Eastern regions of the country and on the outskirts of the cities.
