While the political leaders of the European Union will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome in Berlin on 25 March 2007, the Conference on the Future of Europe (‘Europe: Not without the people!´) will be held in the same city as well. However, at this conference the past will not be celebrated, but current problems the EU is facing will be discussed. Some of these issues include: How to create a democratic Europe of the citizens? How can we achieve and safeguard real subsidiarity, democratic control, transparency and direct citizen participation?
