In view of the magnitude of the literacy challenge, Unesco launched the Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE 2006-2015). As one of Unesco´s three flagship initiatives dedicated to advancing the EFA agenda, LIFE is also a key operational mechanism for achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (UNLD - 2003-2012). Now that the initiative has been in place for three years, UNESCO prepared a review of LIFE 2006-2009.

1 Goal: Education For All campaign

Education for all is likely to become the sexiest development issue during the coming year. How? Through the "1 Goal: Education For All" campaign. This is a strategic link up between the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) and FIFA, the world football body, around the 2010 world cup finals in South Africa. This is the biggest sporting event ever in Africa and will probably have one of the largest television audiences ever - reaching 3 billion people. GCE has been given access to all the world´s leading footballers who are recording short films calling for "One Goal: Education For All" - which will be broadcast around the world next year.

Education for All

The Education for All movement, launched at the World Conference on Education for All in Jomtien (Thailand) in 1990 and renewed at the World Education Forum in Dakar (Senegal) in 2000, is a global commitment to provide quality basic education for all children, youth and adults by the year 2015. Four international agencies (UNDP, UNFPA, Unicef and the World Bank) have joined forces under the leadership of Unesco.
