It's the last days of applying for Additional Measures in the Grundtvig Programme. It is possible to apply for organising a seminar/conference on European-wide issues in Adult Education, the development, dissemination and publication of results from earlier projects or research and publication projects. Cultural Policy project

Flanders and South Africa are maintaining an intensive cultural co-operation.  At the moment, 4 cultural projects are running, among which the cultural policy project that is executed in Flanders by Cultuur Lokaal and SoCiuS.

Communication on Education and training

The Commission adopted on 9 March a Communication on "The new generation of Community education and training programmes after 2006". This Communication outlines the content of two major new Community programmes in the field of education and training, which the Commission will formally propose in the summer.

Social Europe Stalls

SOLIDAR statement to the Spring European Council, 25. and 26. March 2004

SOLIDAR is the alliance of social and economic justice NGOs involved in social policy, social service provision, development and humanitarian aid. We bring together organisations across the European Union who regroup over 8 million citizens. Many of our members are actively involved the field of social inclusion and social protection on national, regional and local level, and were involved in the drawing up of the first two rounds of NAPs/inclusion. On European level, SOLIDAR had been actively involved in the discussions on the future of EU social policy and been part in the Advisory Group of the EPC project "Lisbon Revisited - Finding the way to European Growth". It is based on this experience and expertise, that that SOLIDAR for the second year in a row presents its evaluation of the Lisbon Strategy on the eve of the Spring Summit

Intercultural Learning across Europe

The Network on Intercultural Learning in Adult Education in Europe (NILE) invites you for discussion to its first European Symposium: Intercultural Learning in Adult Education across Europe -  diverse approaches, diverse practice taking place on the 24th of March from 10.00 to 18.00 o'clock in  Castle Vaeshartelt (http://www .vaeshartelt.nl) in Maastricht, NL.

National Qualifications Framework

A National Qualifications Framework is being drawn up in Ireland at the moment. The supportive legislation is the Irish Qualifications Act of 1999 which established a National Qualifications Authority and two new Awards Councils.

Active Citizens - a practical school

Thousands of further education students all over the UK are giving up their time to help others on a regular basis.

With national student volunteer week beginning on February 23 the organisation behind it, Student Volunteering England, is aiming to promote all this good work and encourage other young people to join in.

"Volunteering adds value to the academic curriculum by offering unique learning opportunities for students outside the classroom," said its chair, Will Venters.

Focus on the Structural Funds

The Hungarian Folk High School Society held its General Assembly at the end of February in one of the main conference centres in Budapest. This time the programme of the annual meeting presented by the organisers contained a vast amount of challenges.

Social Inclusion

The three-year project (2002-2005) aims to provide basic skills tutors, leaders of basic skills providers, ethnic minority organisations and decision makers of local authorities with simple, innovative working tools that are applicable in different social and cultural contexts.

EU certificate in Basic Skills

This three-year project (2001-2004) pilots a European Certificate in Basic Skills (EUCEBS). The Certificate is competence based and has six domains: Communications, ICT, Numeracy, Interpersonal Skills, Leaning to Learn and Citizenship.

Donors must deliver, says five Education Ministers

Five education ministers (Gambia, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Republic of Guinea) has called for more funds for education, particularly of girls, in International Herald Tribune. As school bells rang across the world on Monday, which was International Women's Day, more than 100 million primary school-aged children will not be sitting in class - and about 60 million of those missing out will be girls. On average, in the poorest countries in Africa one girl in two is not in school.

Grundtvig Award 2004

The EAEA invites applications for the 2nd Grundtvig Award contest with the theme: Basic Skills/ Key Competences ( i.e. key competencies for living and participating in society).
These key competencies are the "traditional" skills of literacy and numeracy, and include the new ICT skills; communication in the mother tongue and in a foreign language. Equally important are interpersonal and civic competences, basic competences in science and technology, learning to learn, etc.

The Eu elections and lifelong learning

Here is your chance to influence Adult Education at European level. The 2003 General Assembly of EAEA approved a plan to develop co-operation with the MP-s of the European Parliament (EP). The year 2004 is unique as the 10 acceding countries will take part in the European Parliamentary election for the first time. EAEA has never practised joining the activities of the election at European level and we feel it is now time to begin working more efficiently on this level. We invite all members of EAEA to join us in this work.

EAEA General Assembly 2004

The General Assembly of EAEA will this year take place in Metz, France, on Nov 5-7. Please book these dates in your calendar already now! The Assembly will also include a conference on Basic skills. More information will be available when the programme has been finalised.

ALW in Flanders

UNESCO wants to motivate those who offer adult education and place adult learners in the spotlight. This is why UNESCO promotes the organisation of the Adult Learners Week throughout the world.

In Flanders, the Great Learners Week exists since 2001, but in other countries all over the world, the tradition of organising an Adult Learners Week has of course existed for much longer.
