EAEA is growing, ten new members approved today

The EAEA General Assembly 2010 takes place in Yerevan, Armenia

EAEA today approved the membership applications of 10 new members. La Ligue de l´Enseignement from France is the largest association that is now joining. They are a significant boost to EAEA presence in France, and increases our possibilities to help develop the adult education field in France. Luxembourg is now also for the first time represented in EAEA. Other countries that has an increased membership include Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, Malta, Romania, Slovenia and Sweden.

EAEA also for the first time presented a mid-term strategy that was discussed at the General Assembly in Yerevan, Armenia. EAEA President Sue Waddington initiated the discussion by pointing out some major changes that are underway. On the macrolevel the Lisbon Treaty is now in effect, and the world conference on adult education, CONFINTEA VI recently produced the Belem Framework of Action. This Framework is being approved all over the world, and affects our work as well. The Action Plan on lifelong learning is being followed up. The future educational programmes and the role of the EU is being discussed.

EAEA is actively pursuing a research into the wider benefits of learning. The idea is to manifest the many and wide ranging benefits education plays in health, social inclusion, and a range of other areas.

On the funding level EAEA is suggesting to expand the Grundtvig Programme to include a wider scope of countries, as well as securing and increasing the funding for adult education within the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP).

The analysis and the suggested actions described in the EAEA Mid Term Strategy proposal was discussed in working groups in Yerevan, with reports feeding back to the EAEA Board for further elaboration.
