A new inspiration paper aims at helping general adult education in Denmark to integrate sustainable development into different subjects.
Recently a reform of general adult education was implemented in Denmark. Among the elements was the obligatory introduction of sustainable development into all subjects. School leaders and teachers can now get ideas of this effort in an inspiration paper from the Danish Ministry of Education.
The paper is based on the assumption that sustainable development must cover these three fields:
- environment (the fundament of nature)
- economy (stability and independence) and
- social relations (justice and health).
According to the preface: "Traditional education on environment focuses on local and current surroundings, and it stresses the importance of treating nature in a environmentally healthy way for the benefit of one´s own vital necessities. Education for Sustainable Development differs from this by thinking on a long-term basis and on a larger scale. The strategy is based on an ethic obligation to prevent the life forms of consumer society from destroying the fundament of nature which future generation must live by."
In the different chapters of the paper subjects such as Danish and foreign languages are covered. Also Mathmatics and science are treated in addition to history, social science, philosophy and commmunication. Even for education in IT, athletics and art the paper supplies ideas of integration sustainable development.
