Information service for adult education in Europe
Spreading information about adult education from the countries of Europe and EU institutions is the aim and objective of the new English service "European InfoNet Adult Education", which has been developed as part of an EU project and is now available for all those interested.
Ireland: Adult Learning Organisation supports Intercultural Education Strategy
Speaking about Intercultural Awareness Week which has been running from April 7th to 14th, today AONTAS Director Berni Brady supported calls from anti-racism groups for a comprehensive national intercultural education strategy, which would accommodate diversity at all levels within the Irish education system.

International Conference on Education in Prison
The first regional preparatory meeting for the International Conference on Education in Prison (Brussels, 20-24 October 2008) was held in Brasilia, organised by the UNESCO office in Brasilia, the Brazilian Ministries of Education and Justice and the Organizacion de los Estados Iberoamericanos, in close cooperation with the EUROsociAL project, a Latin American/European network on prison education funded by the European Union.
Confintea VI date fixed!
The date for the CONFINTEA International Conference in Brazil has now been fixed for 19-22 May 2009. The proposed motto of the conference is "Living and Learning for a Viable Future: the Power of Adult Learning".
Cultural exchange debated
Culture was praised for being an excellent vehicle of exchange and expression of identity during the second "Brussels Debate" held as part of the 2008 European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
Commission proposes 2009 to become European Year of Creativity and Innovation
Europe needs to boost its capacity for creativity and innovation for both social and economic reasons. That is why the Commission has today adopted a proposal to declare 2009 the European Year of Creativity and Innovation. The decision will be taken later this year by the Council and the European Parliament.
Debate Europe - giving citizens a voice
The European Commission wants to increase citizens' involvement in the EU decision-making process. In a Communication entitled 'Debate Europe - building on the experience of Plan D for Democracy, Dialogue and Debate', it puts forward a set of future actions to foster a general and permanent debate on the future of the European Union among people from all walks of life, at both national and EU level.
Easier Credit transfer in vocational training
The Commission will present plans for a European credit system in vocational education and training (ECVET). The aim is to give citizens better access to lifelong learning across Europe.
The European Qualifications Framework signed
The Recommendation to implement a 'European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning' (EQF) will be signed by the President of the EP and the President of the Council. This means that, from this date onwards, the Member States will begin implementation of the EQF and adapt their legislation and practice to it.
Mobility in vocational education and training
The European Commission plans for a Europe-wide credit system in vocational education and training called ECVET would make it easier for citizens to get formal recognition of knowledge, skills and competences they have gained in another country.
EUCIS LLL Assembly 2008
EUCIS-LLL members met for their fourth General Assembly on 5 March 2008 in Brussels. In the morning session, members adopted the activity, financial and moral reports as well as their action plan for 2008-2010.

Teacher training in Hungary
In 2007, by implementing the Operative Programme for the development of Manpower Resources in Hungary, the country-wide further-training for teachers programme has become a reality for teachers working in adult education. The lecturers in further training were eminent experts in adult education. At the beginning of 2008, a book based on these lectures, "Teachers´ Further-Training Conferences, 2007" was published.
Guidance councelling in the Nordic countries
Like many other words, the concept of guidance/counselling has acquired new meanings over time. On an international scale, career counselling was the first form of guidance and was first introduced in Germany and the US in the early 1900s by labour market organisations. Denmark was first among the Nordic countries to organise guidance and counselling services. Over time, new actors and contexts have made guidance available to new target groups. An important recent development is that guidance has entered the workplace.
First IRAACE Event of 2008 Deemed a Great Success
The Irish Research Association for Adult and Community Education (IRAACE), of which AONTAS is a key member, held its first event of 2008 in the Royal Dublin Hotel, O´Connell Street, Dublin 1 on April 4th. The half day morning event, which was well attended, offered delegates the opportunity to network with other researchers, to discuss current projects and to showcase their latest research.
