History
SV was established in 1967 after a merger of two organisations that was active in the non-formal adult education field.
SV is one of the leading non-formal adult education associations in Sweden, and the largest in terms of territorial coverage. Operations are divided up into 19 districts and about 230 local branches which act independently on the basis of the needs in each region. Throughout the country there are some 1000 full-time employees. The branches have also some 25,000 study circle leaders at their disposal representing a large field of expertise. SV is rapidly becoming the leading local force in Sweden in areas such as culture, environment, social issues, international co-operation and democratic development.
SV´s activities are supported by the Swedish Government, the County Councils and the Municipalities.
Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) and other national authorities are partly financing some of our international and national projects.
Among our members are the Federation of Swedish Farmers, the Centre Party, the Liberal Party and the National Federation of Rural Community Centres. In addition to these we find a number of associated member organisations and cooperative organisations that participate in both our national and international activities.

SV´s activities extend far beyond Sweden. We are actively involved in the EU, Eastern Europe and Third World issues in the form of education activities, information work and the exchange of experience and knowledge.
We are living in an increasingly globalised world. And we all need a forum where we can seriously study and consider the implications of profound transformation in society. A forum that helps us to see the positive aspects and understand why evolution of civil society is inevitable, thereby facilitating our individual adjustment to it.
SV provides opportunities for everyone interested in national and international relations. We build networks that transcend national boundaries and create social and economic contacts. We are particularly active in developing closer co-operation between organisations in the Nordic countries, Europe and other countries in the world. We disseminate information about other countries and are engaged in projects in Africa as well as in Eastern Europe.
SV gives people the opportunity to establish international contacts and gain new insights. The study circle has proved to be an ideal instrument both in facilitating individual development and in developing different kinds of organisations in Sweden and many other countries. SV´s unique experience in organising and operating study circles represents a key resource in this respect. For us, as well as for those we co-operate with abroad - the exchange of experience is very important.
The study circle has also become an "export product". An increasing part of our activities consists of co-operation with other countries, not least with the developing countries, in which we can contribute to the enhancement of skills through our broad pedagogical and practical experience in special projects. These activities are being implemented both in the countries concerned and through training of the representatives of those countries.
