UNESCO Institute for Education turns 60

June 2011 marks the 60th Anniversary of the First Governing Board meeting of the UNESCO Institute for Education (UIE), the forerunner of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. The meeting was held from 17 to 19 June 1951 in Wiesbaden, Germany, and was attended by Maria Montessori and Jean Piaget. The Governing Board members drafted the statutes and appointed Professor Walter Merck, Chair of Comparative Education at the University of Hamburg, as Director.

EAEA reponds to the New Skills for New Jobs initiative

EAEA welcomes the initiative of the European Commission for this communication, especially the attention given to Adult Education and Lifelong learning.

Alan Tuckett elected president of ICAE

Alan Tuckett, currently Chief Executive of NIACE, was elected President of the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) at its 8th World Assembly in Malmo on Friday 17th June 2011. He will be President for four years until 2015 and is the first European to hold the role.

New Board of EAEA elected

The 2011 EAEA General Assembly reelected Sue Waddington as President of the association, and elected a new Board with ten members in Malmö, Sweden on 14 June.

Regional follow-up to Confintea

On invitation of the Slovenian Ministry for Education and Sports and organized by dvv international in cooperation with the Slovenian Adult Education Association, about 40 experts from Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo (including guests from Armenia, Belarus, Norway and Czech Republic) convened on the 2nd of June 2011 in Ljubljana in order to identify common regional points of follow up to the international UNESCO Conference on adult learning.
