This seminar explores the notion of citizenship education as it is discussed in the European Union and around the world. Citizenship education as education for democracy plays a vital role in the development of European unity, mutual understanding and building a "European" identity among its people.
The aim of the seminar therefore is not only to share theoretical knowledge about citizenship education in different European countries but also to discuss models and curricula concerning citizenship education as they have been developed and are currently in use in particular in non-formal education.
One of the core models we will discuss is a curriculum developed in the course of a Grundtvig 1 project in collaboration of five European countries, based on the so-called "competencies" of the German philosopher and sociologist Oskar Negt. The competencies concern questions of identity and intercultural understanding; social justice; history; economy; technology and ecology.
These topics concern most aspects of our life and we think they are needed by all people in order to understand the world within they are living, to explain political and economical developments and contradictions. They also should give people tools to envision a future society and to enable them to shape society according to their own needs and political ideas.
In the seminar we would also like the participants to bring their own model courses/ ideas to share with others in order to discuss a variety of possibilities teaching citizenship education. One of the most important questions being how these curricula lead to "transformative learning". A notion of learning developed mainly in concepts of Canadian and Latin American popular education which supports political and social action going beyond mere intellectual development and understanding.
The seminar, organized by the EAEA, wants to promote the idea of active citizenship. Therefore we invite participants to become actively involved in the seminar, to share their specific approaches to citizenship education; their teaching experiences; their visions. Those of you who are interested in introducing your own curricula to the participants are invited to prepare a presentation. We will send you some papers in advance for a more detailed preparation.
