The social dimension of education and training

This round table was organised by SOLIDAR and the European Civil Society Platform on Lifelong Learning (EUCIS-LLL). Education and training/lifelong learning figures prominently in the Europe 2020 Strategy as a method of promoting smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. However in times of crisis and change, the austerity measures put in place by EU Member States are having an adverse effect by acting on investment in education and training.

New Director at UIL appointed

Arne Carlsen from Denmark has been appointed as the new Director of UIL by the Director-General of UNESCO.

Pilot Workshop on developing capacity for establishing lifelong learning systems in UNESCO Member States

As part of its strategic objective to build capacity for effective lifelong learning policy and practice in Member States, UIL organised this Pilot Workshop in Hamburg,Germany, from 22 November to 3 December 2010.

Monitoring the implementation of the Belém Framework for Action: International Expert Meeting

Twenty-seven governmental experts, heads of non-formal adult education departments and representatives of inter-governmental and civil society organisations took part in an international meeting at UIL from 25 to 27 January 2011 to discuss approaches and methods in monitoring the implementation of the Belém Framework for Action. Specialists from all UNESCO regional bureaux and from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) complemented the group.

CONFINTEA Fellowships offered by UIL

To support the implementation of the commitments made at CONFINTEA VI, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning offers fellowships for key personnel from selected Member States.

EU education report: good progress, but more effort needed to achieve targets

EU countries have improved their education systems in key areas over the past decade but they have achieved only one out of five benchmarks set for 2010, the European Commission's new progress report on education and training reveals.

Voluntary teaching in Germany

Volunteering has a particular significance in adult education in Germany. The total number of volunteers among the educators lies at around a tenth of the workforce.

Increasing Popularity of Volunteering: Volunteers Demand Experience, Training and Support

Volunteering is strongly linked both to non-formal and informal learning. An EU report released in 2010 and indicates that, as volunteering is getting more popular, volunteers' demands are increasing in terms of experience, training and support. Among other significant findings, the study stresses that voluntary activities contribute to adult's personal development, learning skills and competences thus enhancing employability.

The Directorate-General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) is conducting a short survey on the most effective ways to increase awareness of and participation in adult learning.
