IRELAND: Government Must Prioritise Measures to Encourage Workers' Participation in Education

AONTAS, the National Association of Adult Education in Ireland, has said a new EU report further proves that the Government must prioritise the introduction of paid educational leave, and the development of a funding model for supporting workers in education and training.

Europe web sites go .eu

The European institutions´ sites will start operating under the ".eu" top level domain on 9 May 2006, Europe Day. It means that they can now use this domain to project their own web identity, as EU citizens have been able to do since 7 April 2006. The institutions´ internet addresses will change to the ". eu" suffix as of 9 May 2006.

While noting positive trends in certain areas, the overall progress of Europe´s education and training systems towards the goals set in the Lisbon strategy is insufficient.

Adult Skills essential

UK: 80% of the workforce needed for the UK economy in 2015 are already in today´s workforce. Future demography shows that there will only be enough young people to fill just one in three of the new and replacement jobs over the next ten years. A conference - to be held during Adult Learners´ Week by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education - will stress the centrality of adult skills in meeting the challenges of the UK and global economy.

Building European civil society through community development

The Budapest Declaration
One hundred and thirty community workers, researchers, donors and policy-makers, and representatives from government, civil society organisations and community groups, from 33 countries across the European Union and beyond, met March 25-28 2004 at an international conference, to prepare for the accession of ten new countries to the EU.

Leonardo da Vinci ambassadors: improving the quality of European vocational training

At a ceremony held on 10 May in Graz, Austria, the European Commission and the Austrian Presidency of the EU jointly honoured the first ever "Leonardo da Vinci Ambassadors".

European transparency

The Green Paper on the European Transparency Initiative (ETI) was launched by the Commission on 3 May. The Green Paper brings together three aspects of the ETI in one document covering transparency in lobbying activities, feedback on the application of the minimum standards for consultation and the disclosure of beneficiaries of EU funds.

Europe and poverty

Poverty affects 72 million European citizens, i.e. 16% of the population. Although Europe has been concerned by this question for many years, it has only a few levers for action available to it due to the principle of subsidiarity which applies.

Thousands came to Berlin

In what must be the largest non-formal adult education event in Europe, some 1500 participants met up for the 12th German Adult Education Conference in Berlin on May 4-5.

French web openning

The decision has been taken by EAEA member AUPF to create a website for the French open universities. It will be opened to all and very interactive.

AONTAS Response to Quarterly National Household Survey on Educational Attainment

AONTAS, the Irish National Association of Adult Education, has said the figures released today by the CSO show the Government needs to do more to support adults to participate in third level education.

Citizens' agenda

The Commission, as ever trying to identify the roots of the current constitutional crisis, has come up with yet another approach, a Citizens' agenda for Europe" identyfying "de livery failures" as the main cause of EU's "legitimacy crisis".
